FEPPS’ Ethics Bowl Debut!

Ever heard of Ethics Bowl? It’s a form of debate that explores moral questions in a rigorous, reasoned, and civil manner. The FEPPS Ethics Bowl team formed last fall, and to the best of our knowledge it’s the first collegiate team inside a women’s prison. And after months of hard work, they just had their very first official debate! The FEPPS and University of Puget Sound teams debated questions like: Should we bring back species that have been driven to extinction? Are laws allowing terminally ill children to choose euthanasia morally defensible? Is China’s social credit system, which assigns a social credit score based on behavior, morally justified? Do wealthy nations owe a climate debt obligation toward less-wealthy nations?

FEPPS and UPS teams each won one round, and the UPS team won the overall debate by just 3.5 points out of 500. Very impressive first outing, Team FEPPS! And, congratulations and a big thank-you to team Puget Sound. Huge, huge gratitude to philosophy professor extraordinaire Paul Tubig for his tireless efforts and enthusiasm in bringing Ethics Bowl to WCCW, and his weekly coaching of the FEPPS team since fall. Special thanks also to the Seattle University team and coach, who came out for a practice debate the week before; to all of the judges; and to the administration of WCCW for supporting this event.
